Pumpkin Creations Unseen

This Halloween, I have to admit, was one that I didn't put much thought into. First, because I didn't have a party that I can go to, thus, not thinking about what I'm going to be. Second, well, I've just been real busy. But my co-worker friend tried to get everyone into the Halloween spirit and organized a Pumpkin Carving Contest. I've never really had the opportunity to carve many pumpkins in my life, so the night before, I thought, hmm, why not. It's the one thing I can do to get myself into some kind of Halloween spirit. So I stopped by Vons after work on Halloween's Eve to look for a pumpkin to carve. But I must have had an amnesia and forgot how much people get into this holiday and I couldn't find one decent looking pumpkin! What's left were either rotting or bruised pumpkins. So I was a bit disappointed. But lo and behold, I found a basket full of mini pumpkins a little bigger than the size of my palm. They were adorable and beautiful. Cheap too! I got them for 79 cents each. So I decided to get a couple of them to carve. What I also realized was that I'd have to carve with regular kitchen knives and potato peelers because they were all sold out of pumpkin carving kit.

I remembered seeing funny vegetable and fruit carvings and I was inspired by it. So what I did was look at each pumpkin and try to imagine what kind of face it would make. After carving one with a potato peeler, I decided to do just 3 (it was hard). But the inspiration came after the first one. I had this scenario in my head about a boy who got all dressed up to impress this girl he had a crush on, only to be crushed when he saw her kissing another boy (sad, I know). So here they are:

I was so proud of my little creations and couldn't wait to show it off at work. But then the horror came on Halloween Day on the way to work. I got into a car accident and the rice spilled all over my trunk and my pumpkin creatures rolled around. So I had to go to the hospital to get myself checked out because of the huge bump on my head from hitting the steering wheel twice. But thank God the cad scan came out normal, so I went home to get some rest.

So my sad pumpkins never saw the light of day. Boo. But hopefully you guys get to enjoy it.

 

Let's Rock!

To get everyone, including myself, excited about the rock star party this Saturday, I found some imagery to inspire what I'm going to wear. Things to keep in mind when you're dressing up for a rock star party:

• Black is always in, but you can always throw in some fun neon
• Anything with spikes, studs, chains, skulls, lightning bolts are shoo-ins
• If you've got tattoo, show it off. If you don't, you can always fake it
• Paint your nails black, and if you have extra time, you can paint words like P-U-N-K or R-O-C-K in white
• Wear your leather jacket, pants, boots, whatever you've got
• Take out those old jeans that got ripped on the knees and rip some more to make your own designer rock jeans!
• Patterns to consider are stripes, houndstooth, and checkers
• Fishnet gloves for the shy ones, fishnet stockings for the sexy ones, and fishnet shirts for the daring!
• Mullets rock! This is the time when you can wear a mullet and be cool.
• If you want an excuse to get those cool guitar bags or guitar pick earrings, now is the time!

Sweet Tea for a Sweet Bride-to-Be

On this sunny Sunday, D'Lsh teamed up with Lucy's sister Thuy to throw her best friend Yuan a bridal tea party. While she prepared delicious little sandwiches, quiches and baked homemade cupcakes with strawberry preserve frosting in the kitchen, we were busy setting up the table, blowing up gigantic pink and white balloons to tie on the chairs, arranging pretty pink flowers in teapots and cups, and decorating the bride's throne. It came together in merely two hours. When the bride arrived with her mom, she was very pleasantly surprised by the extravagant display waiting for her. Thuy took the honor of crowning the bride and putting the sash on her. As soon as everyone was seated, it was as if we were all transformed into little girls playing dress up and having a tea party with our friends. We sipped different flavored tea, from African Nectar to Chamomile Citrus, from a fancy teacup that Thuy has carefully selected for each one of us. Of course, with our pinky finger pointed out. It was a delightful afternoon and we felt very honored to be a part of this sweet fanfare for the blushing bride. Enjoy the pics from the party and stay tuned for more parties next week!
